The staff of SJB's Cassell Child Development Center boasts 19 teachers across 7 different classrooms.

Complete with soothing, neutral colors, these classrooms have a naturalistic design, to evoke the feeling that the center’s an extension of home. 

Our Cassell Child Development Center opened in 2011. As the one and only SJB location that serves toddlers all the way up to school-age students, Cassell is a learning environment to approximately 157 children, ranging from 18 months to 11 years of age. 

The toddlers stay together in one “pod,” which is split in half down the middle, meaning the room functions as two separate classrooms. One side is EHS-A; the other is EHS-B. 

The preschool students have three classrooms. One, known as the Pre 1 class, is for the school’s “younger 3s.” It’s known as the transition room, as it’s the space that children evolve to once they move out of the toddler classrooms. 

The Pre 2 room is for 3-4-year-olds. And the TK room is for children who are set to head off to TK the following year, as well as for the ones already going to TK. For children already in Cassell Elementary School’s TK class, parents drop off their children at SJB early in the morning, then teachers walk them over to the elementary school when it’s time. Upon students’ release from school at 12pm, SJB teachers pick them up and bring them back to the TK room. 

SJB’s Cassell location also has two school-age classrooms — one for children from Kindergarten to 3rd grade; the other for children from 4th to 6th.  

As with all SJB sites, Cassell embraces a strong Creative Curriculum program, which allows for activities and lessons to be structured around the students’ interests. Once a month, the Cassell location hosts a Family Engagement activity to help cultivate a strong sense of community and partnership among parents, children, and teachers. 

Toddlers and preschoolers have their own play yards, while school-age children have their own dedicated area, as well as part of the Elementary School campus. Each classroom also has its own planter box situated in an outdoor garden. 

All meals are served family style. Teachers eat at each table with their students, demonstrating good table manners. That sense of home life is key here, as it is across all SJB locations. Also, three free meals — breakfast, lunch, and snack — are served daily.
