Tucked away on a residential street in San Jose, our San Juan site carries historical significance.

Back in 1971, it was the first site of SJB’s to open, providing learning opportunities and care to children from low-income families while paving the way toward making early education and child care attainable to all, regardless of economic class.

Our founder Bill Williams was the trailblazer who nurtured the vision for the site, and turned it into a reality.
At the time, Mr. Williams was living in the neighborhood, where he saw new apartments being built for low-income families. An idea started forming in his mind: He knew that all too often low-income families were unable to afford child care, and thus got left with limited opportunities to work or go to school, and he wanted to do something to break this cycle of poverty. He knew that these families deserved the same opportunities that higher-income families had. And so he pushed for a preschool site to be built among the apartments — a place where children and families would have access to high-quality care.
And thus our San Juan site was born.

Today, the school is home to 37 teachers and about 200 children, ages 18 months to 5 years.

Made up of 6 toddler classrooms and 7 preschool classrooms, the school spans 3 buildings and has 4 playgrounds outside, including a lovely garden area.

Toddler classrooms — serving kids from 18 months to 3 years old — have 1 teacher for every 4 toddlers. Pre-school classrooms — which go from 36 months to 5 years old — have 1 teacher for every 8 students.

All children receive 3 free meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and a snack. All meals are subsidized by the State, and abide by healthy, nutritious standards.

All of the teachers and staff that help to support our San Juan site are true change-makers in the community, dedicated to putting families and children first.

When we first meet with our families, we take the time to ask about their needs, then do our best to ensure that those needs are met. Our focus is on building strong relationships with families and children. These bonds help us to serve the community in tangible ways, creating the right environment and culture for our families to thrive.

In our preschool classes, we use the Creative Curriculum approach. Meaning: Our teachers structure the day around the children’s interests. Teachers work in harmony with the children’s natural expression, fully observing and connecting with them so as to understand what will best support their learning trajectories.

As San Juan is our biggest site, we’ve started to also use it as a training space, to evolve and prepare our future teachers. With an experienced teacher support team in place, we are confident that our training program will equip new teachers with the knowledge that they need to propel our mission forward and take part in creating exceptional educational environments.

SJB’s overriding vision for the site is to cultivate an environment where families can find joy, fun, and meaning, while also being a part of all that’s happening there. We know that the more involved and interested parents are in their children’s education, the more their children will thrive.

Regarding site upgrades: One of our site’s toddler classrooms was recently remodeled, and we plan to continue renovating the site in the near future.
